  • Violence Interrupter (Part time)- Credible Messenger Program

    Serving Cumberland County, NJ

    Violence Interrupter Responsibilities:

    • Develop relationships with influential individuals and groups in communities with a history or high risk of gun violence; Meet with high‐risk individuals and groups on a regular basis to discuss issues; engage high-risk victims of gun violence & their families in meaningful dialogue about stopping the next shooting and ending the violence/prevent retaliation

    •Respond to calls for short-term crisis stabilization 24 hours a day

    •Deescalate individuals at high risk of violence

    •Mediate disputes that may lead to violence

    •Provide a brief and supportive counseling/ safety planning to address behaviors and thinking of high-risk individuals who may become involved in gun violence as perpetrators or as victims

    •Engage and build trust with individuals who have experienced recent violence or are at risk of committing violent acts. Assess risk for retaliation.

    •Refer high‐risk individuals, and those impacted by violence to Outreach Workers for case management/services; Provide referrals and resource information during crises

    Additional Duties

    •Participate in initial and ongoing group training

    •Attend community responses as needed (walks, community events, vigils, etc.)

    •Participate in violence prevention efforts with other providers as assigned

    •Document all activities while respecting confidentiality and maintaining safety

    •Attend staff meetings

    Qualities of an ideal candidate

    •Well-connected and respected in the community

    •Has overcome a history of violence/ gang involvement or has otherwise been impacted by gun violence

    •Models composure under pressure

    •Demonstrates high levels of patience and understanding in tense situations

    •Always advocates for peace

    •Has experience or interest in working with victims and perpetrators of violence, including youth

    Position Details:

    Part-time, with evening/weekend availability

    May be called upon 24/7 in crisis situations

  • Community Outreach Worker (Part Time)- Credible Messenger Program

    Serving Cumberland County, NJ

    Outreach Worker Responsibilities:

    •Develop relationships with influential individuals and groups in communities with a history or high risk of gun violence; Meet with high‐risk individuals and groups on a regular basis to discuss issues; engage high-risk victims of gun violence & their families in meaningful dialogue about stopping the next shooting and ending the violence/prevent retaliation

    •Assist victims & their families in accessing various resources & social services

    •Provide a brief and supportive counseling/ safety planning to address behaviors and thinking of high-risk individuals who may become involved in gun violence as perpetrators or as victims

    •Help at-risk individuals replace violence/anti-social activities with pro-social/law-abiding activities and services

    •Assess community members’ everyday needs in order to advocate for opportunities.

    Additional Duties

    •Participate in initial and ongoing group training

    •Attend community responses (walks, community events, vigils, etc.)

    •Participate in violence prevention efforts with other providers as assigned

    •Document all activities while respecting confidentiality and maintaining safety
